How to Use This Converter
- Select the source currency (the currency you are converting from).
- Enter the amount you wish to convert.
- Select the target currency (AOA or another currency).
- The converter displays the indicative mid-market result along with the BNA reference rate used for the calculation.
Understanding the Results
Mid-market rate. The rate shown is the mid-point between buy and sell prices, derived from the BNA reference rate and international market data. This is the fairest representation of the currency’s value at a given moment.
Actual transaction rates will differ. When you exchange currency through a bank, bureau de change, or remittance provider, the rate you receive will include a spread (markup) above the mid-market rate. Typical spreads in the Angolan market:
| Channel | Typical Spread Above Mid-Market |
|---|---|
| Tier 1 dealer bank (large transactions) | 0.5–1.5% |
| Tier 2 bank (medium transactions) | 1.0–2.5% |
| Retail bank counter | 2.0–4.0% |
| Remittance provider | 2.0–5.0% |
| Parallel market | Variable (see spread tracker) |
Conversion Examples
Example 1: USD to AOA. Converting $10,000 at the BNA reference rate: $10,000 x 914.60 = Kz 9,146,000. At a Tier 1 bank with a 1% spread: $10,000 x 905.45 = Kz 9,054,500 (you receive fewer kwanza because the bank sells USD at a premium).
Example 2: EUR to AOA. Converting EUR 5,000 at the indicative cross rate: EUR 5,000 x ~970 = Kz 4,850,000. Note: this conversion may route through USD (EUR to USD to AOA), adding a second layer of spread.
Important Considerations
- Rates update daily. The BNA publishes new reference rates each business day (see BNA rates for the publication schedule).
- Cross rates are synthetic. Non-dollar pairs are computed through USD triangulation. There is no direct interbank market for most AOA cross rates.
- Trade transactions require CEOC. If you are converting currency for import or export payments, additional CEOC documentation is required. Use the CEOC calculator for trade-specific estimates.
- Capital market transactions. FX conversions for investment in Angolan securities are governed by Aviso 15/19.
For specialized calculations, see the import cost calculator and export revenue calculator. For programmatic access to rate data, see the FX API.
