How to Buy Stocks on BODIVA

BODIVA (Bolsa de Divida e Valores de Angola) is Angola’s securities exchange, operating both the debt and equity markets. Currently five equities are listed, representing Angola’s banking, insurance, and capital markets sectors. For investors seeking direct exposure to the $115.2 billion economy (2024, IMF), BODIVA is the primary gateway.

The combined BODIVA equity market capitalization is approximately $3.37 billion. These five names were brought to market through the government’s PROPRIV privatization program, and additional listings – including potentially Sonangol and Unitel – are expected in the medium term.

Step-by-Step: Buying Stocks on BODIVA

Step 1: Open a bank account. You need a kwanza-denominated account at one of Angola’s 26 commercial banks. Foreign investors should see our guide on bank accounts for foreigners. BAI and BFA are the most commonly used banks for capital market investors.

Step 2: Open a CEVAMA custody account. CEVAMA (Central de Valores Mobiliarios de Angola) is the central securities depository. All BODIVA-listed shares are held in book-entry form at CEVAMA. Your bank or broker will facilitate the account opening.

Step 3: Engage a BODIVA-authorized broker. All equity transactions on BODIVA must be executed through a licensed broker-dealer. Most major banks operate brokerage arms (BAI Investimentos, BFA Gestao de Activos, etc.). Independent brokerages also operate with CMC authorization.

Step 4: Fund your account. Transfer kwanza to your brokerage account. For foreign investors, convert USD to kwanza (USD/AOA: 914.60) through your bank. Under Aviso 15/19, FX transfers for capital market investments are exempt from BNA approval.

Step 5: Place your order. Instruct your broker to buy shares in the desired company at market price or at a specified limit price. BODIVA operates an order-driven electronic trading system with defined trading hours.

Step 6: Settlement. BODIVA follows a standard settlement cycle. Upon settlement, shares are credited to your CEVAMA account and are reflected in your portfolio.

Foreign Investor Access

Non-resident investors can buy and hold BODIVA equities. The key enabling regulation is Aviso 15/19, issued by the BNA, which exempts FX transfers related to capital market investments from central bank approval. This applies to both inbound (USD to AOA for share purchases) and outbound (AOA to USD for repatriation of sale proceeds, dividends, and capital gains) transfers.

There are no foreign ownership limits on BODIVA-listed equities, though specific sector regulations may apply (e.g., banking sector rules on qualifying shareholdings above certain thresholds require BNA approval).

Tax Treatment

Capital gains. Gains from the sale of BODIVA shares are subject to 15% IAC (Imposto sobre a Aplicacao de Capitais).

Dividends. Dividends paid on listed shares are subject to 15% IAC withholding at source.

Treaty relief. Investors from jurisdictions with double taxation treaties (Portugal, UAE, others) may be eligible for reduced withholding rates. See our full tax guide.

Trading Considerations

Liquidity. BODIVA is a frontier exchange with limited daily trading volume compared to more developed African markets. Investors should expect wider bid-ask spreads and may need to be patient when executing larger orders.

Market information. BODIVA publishes daily trading summaries and price data. The CMC publishes financial disclosures from listed companies, including annual reports and material event announcements. Angola X provides analysis and market intelligence for BODIVA investors.

Brokerage fees. Commissions and custody fees vary by broker. Confirm the fee schedule with your broker before trading.

Why BODIVA Matters

Despite its small size, BODIVA represents the foundation of Angola’s capital markets infrastructure. The exchange is positioned to grow as the PROPRIV program delivers additional listings, as institutional investors (pension funds, insurance companies) increase domestic equity allocations, and as foreign investors gain familiarity with the market. Early participants establish relationships and market knowledge that position them advantageously for future IPOs.
